Department of State Program

Over fifty years ago, the State Department of the United States government established a program to arrange visits to the U.S. for emerging leaders from around the world. The vision was, and is, to have these future leaders visit with American citizens, get to know each other and gain an understanding of our cultures and lifesyles. This U.S. State Department program is supported by over 100  local organizations in cities across the country similar to our San Antonio Council for International Visitors (SACIV).

Since its founding, the national program has as its alumni 160 heads of state and 600 cabinet-level ministers, including: Willy Brant, Valery Fiscard d' Estang, Indira Gandhi, and Margaret Thatcher. Thousands of other  Alumni have become leaders of business and professions in their countries.

"Precisely because I am a private citizen, I can act without the restrictions of profit, position or policy. My only position is that of an ordinary human being, and it is in that role that I hoped, in some small way, to bring together and consolidate the will for peace into a global commitment. -- Daisaku Ikeda
